Frank Turner: 'Rock'n'roll is a dumbed down art form'
Frank Turner has said he believes rock'n'roll is a "dumbed down art form", but that is why he likes it so much.
Speaking to Kerrang!, the ex-Million Dead frontman has said he believes that rock'n'roll celebrates a "desire to get drunk, dance, kiss pretty girls and stay up too late."
He said: "Rock'n'roll is a dumbed down art form and that's why I like it. I don't want it to be classical music or metaphysical poetry; I want it to be rock'n'roll."

"It's a celebration of the adolescent impulses that stay with us for the rest of our lives: that desire to get drunk, dance, kiss pretty girls and stay up too late. Whenever it gets deeper than that, people have missed the point."

[Review] Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones (English)
I must confess that I am a great admirer of Frank Turner’s work, solo or with his former band Million Dead. So, even before hearing the new album, I expected it to be another masterpiece. However, after listening to several times that "England Keep My Bones," I can say that it exceeded all my expectations.
The album begins with "Eulogy," a very short song, however, with a strong message. This song is a great start this album. Then comes the first single, "Peggy Sang The Blues." The first time I heard this song I didn’t like it, because it seemed a little different from the normal style of Frank Turner, but it quickly became one of my favorites, especially in terms of lyrics, with lines like: "It does not matter where you come from, / It matters where you go. / No-one gets remembered / For the things they didn’t do."
"I Still Believe" had been present at the "Rock & Roll" EP and is also one of my favorite songs on the album. "Rivers", with its very particular fingerpicking and with the presence of violins, is one of the songs that show an influence of traditional English music.
"I Am Disappeared" is a song that, apart from the obvious references to a major influence on Frank Turner, Bob Dylan, reports its willingness to sometimes leave everything behind.
"English Curse" is the most "different" song from the album. This song is undoubtedly the most influenced by traditional English music, as we all know, Frank Turner appreciates.
"One Foot Before The Other" is probably the "heaviest" song that Frank ever wrote. Examples of this are lines like: "On the very day I die, the very last of my desires / Is that you take my broken body and commit it to the fire." Then comes a song which sounded much more "lively", "If Ever I Stray." Frank himself said that when people at the concerts know the lyrics of this song, it will become one of the greatest moments of the shows. "Wessex Boy" is a song about his origins, his hometown. This song has the support of Franz Nicolay.
"Nights Become Days" is the most calm and beautiful song of the album. Then comes "Redemption", which is one of the saddest songs ever wrote Frank Turner. Despite this, in my opinion, is one of his best songs ever.
The album ends in the best way, with "Glory Hallelujah", a song that may cause some controversy due to the fact that Frank clearly stated: "There is no God." This song also has the collaboration of a gospel choir.
In short, we can consider this album as a mix of the three first album Frank Turner, with the folk side of "Sleep Is For The Week" and "Love, Ire and Song ', and the rock side of “The Poetry Of Deed”. This makes "England Keep My Bones" the best Frank Turner album to date.
9.5/10
[Review] Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones (Português)
Segue-se o primeiro single, “Peggy Sang The Blues”. Da primeira vez que ouvi esta música não gostei muito, parecia um pouco diferente do estilo normal do Frank Turner, mas rapidamente se tornou uma das minha favoritas, principalmente em termos de letra, com destaque para versos como: “It doesn't matter where you come from,/ It matters where you go./ No-one gets remembered/ For the things they didn't do.”
“One Foot Before The Other” é, provavelmente, a música mais “pesada” que o Frank alguma vez escreveu. Exemplo disto são versos como: “On the very day I die, the very last of my desires/ Is that you take my broken body and commit it to the fire.”

Frank Turner - I Am Disappeared
I keep having dreams
Of pioneers and pirate ships and Bob Dylan
Of people wrapped up tight in the things that will kill them
Of being trapped in a lift plunging straight to the bottom
Of open seas and ways of life we've forgotten
I keep having dreams
Amy worked in a bar in Exeter
I went back to her house and I slept beside her
She woke up screaming in the middle of the night
Terrified of her own insides
Dreams of pirate ships and Patty Hearst
Breaking through a life over rehearsed
She can't remember which came first
The house, the home or the terrible thirst
She keeps having dreams
And on the worst days
When it feels like life weighs ten thousand tonnes
She's got her cowboy boots and car keys on the bed stand
So she can always run
She can get up, shower and in half an hour she'd be gone
I keep having dreams of things I need to do
Of waking up and not following through
But it feels like I haven't slept at all
When I wake to a silence and she's facing the wall
Posters of Dylan and of Hemingway
An antique compass for a sailor's escape
She says you just can't live this way
And I close my eyes and I never say
I'm still having dreams
And on the worst days
When it feels like life weighs ten thousand tonnes
I sleep with my passport
One eye on the back door
So I can always run
I can get up, shower and in half an hour I'd be gone
And come morning
I am disappeared
Just an imprint
On the bed sheets
And by the roadside
With my thumb out
A car pulls up
And Bob's driving
And so I climb in
We don't say a word
As we pull off
Into the sunrise
And these rivers
Of tarmac
Are like arteries
Course the country
We are blood cells
Alive in
The blood stream
And beating heart of the country
We are electric
Pulses
In pathways
Of the sleeping soul of the country
We are electric
Pulses
In the pathway
Of the sleeping soul of the country
(We are electric)
The sleeping sould of the country
(The sleeping soul of the country x 2)

Frank Turner chats about his 'atheist gospel song' at Great Escape
Frank Turner has chatted about how he recorded an "atheist gospel song" on his forthcoming album ‘England Keep My Bones’, as he helped kick off Brighton's Great Escape festival tonight (May 12).
Speaking to NME ahead of his performance at the multi-venue event in the city, Turner talked about how he decamped to a church in London's Crouch End for sessions for the bulk of his June-bound fourth album.
"The last track – ’Glory Hallelujah’ - is an atheist gospel song and the chorus involves the gospel choir singing, ‘There is no God,’ but it is still a functioning church [where it was recorded]," he explained. "I was conducting it on a chair and I thought, 'If I'm wrong about this I’m really fucked'. There is no coming back from that kind of offence."
The album, which is due out on June 6, features 12 tracks and has "more bells and whistles" on it and is "more expansive" than his 2009 record ’Poetry Of The Dead’, Turner claimed.
Speaking about his return to Brighton the singer/guitarist said that preperation for tonight’s show was a bit of a mad rush. "I haven’t actually played here for a long time so it’s good to be back," he said. "I'm kind of on a bit of a mad one because I was in Dunfermline yesterday and I'm in Nottingham tomorrow (May 13) and I’ve just flown down here now. Madness."
During his performance at the Coalition venue tonight the singer-songwriter debuted a number of tracks from his new album including ’Peggy Sang The Blues’.

Gigs you should have been at - Frank Turner live at the Union Chapel 2009
This wasn't a common Frank Turner gig. Although all his gigs are special, this was different, because the majority of the songs were performed in a different way. This gig is included in the DVD "Take To The Road", with Frank's gig at Shepherds Bush Empire also in 2009.
Note: I posted here just two videos from this gig because I couldn't find more on Youtube, sorry.

Interview with Frank Turner
Frank Turner is an English folk/punk singer-songwriter.
He has already released three albums: “Sleep Is For The Week” (2007), “Love Ire & Song” (2008) and “Poetry Of The Deed” (2009). He has also released three EP’s: “Campfire Punkrock” (2006), “The Real Damage” (2007) and “Rock & Roll” (2010).
Frank was the singer of the post hardcore band Million Dead until the band’s split in 2005.
Thanks to his great “folk songwriting, catchy melodies and punk passion”, Frank was invited to sign for the independent label Epitaph Records that belongs to Bad Religion’s guitarist Brett Gurewitz. Gurewitz once said: “Frank Turner’s music is a revelation to me.”
Frank Turner kindly accepted to answer a few questions. I hope you like to read this short interview. For me, it was an honor to make these questions to Frank!
1- How would you describe yourself for those who don’t know you?
I'm an English kid who grew up listening to punk rock but is now trying to make something like folk music.
2- What can your fans expect from your upcoming album, “England Keep My Bones”?
The new record I'm excited about (though I would say that!). I made it with my band, but it feels like more of a solo record than the last album that I did (Poetry Of The Deed). I think the songs are strong as hell, and I can't wait for people to hear it!
3- You played your biggest gig to date recently at the Brixton Academy. How did you feel playing in front of so many people that were there just to see you?
That was a pretty crazy day, very surreal. I have been doing this for a long, long time, and it's almost like I played to more people that night than in my first 300 gigs combined or something. It felt good, like hard work had paid off.
4- What bands have you been listening to lately?
Recently I've been listening to a lot of Lucero, and also some English folk stuff, like Ben Marwood, Emily Barker, Jim Lockey.
5- Last question, do you have any idea when you’re coming to Portugal?
Not 100% sure, but I have never been, so I want to come a lot! To play shows and to hang out. Hopefully before the end of this year.
I think all of you should listen to this amazing artist. He’s really talented. Frank will be touring around the world from April, so go to his website to see if he’s playing near you. If he does, don’t miss the chance of watching him live. You won’t regret.
Frank Turner’s upcoming album, “England Keep My Bones”, will be released on June 6. You can watch Frank performing live a new song from that album below. This song is called "If I Ever Stray".

Frank Turner - Photosynthesis
Well I guess I should confess that I am starting to get old,
All the latest music fads all passed me by and left me cold.
All the kids are talking slang, I won't pretend to understand,
All my friends are getting married, mortagages and pension plans
And it's obvious my angry adolescent days are done
And I'm happy and I'm settled in the person I've become
But that doesn't mean I'm settled up and sitting out the game,
Time may change alot but some things may stay the same
And I won't sit down
And I won't shut up
And most of all I will not grow up
And I won't sit down
And I won't shut up
And most of all I yeah I won't grow up
Oh maturity's a wrapped up package deal so it seems
And ditching teenage fantasy means ditching all your dreams.
All your friends and peers and family solomnly tell you you will
Have to grow up be an adult yeah be bored and unfulfilled.
Oh when no ones yet explained to me exactly what's so great
About slaving 50 years away on something that you hate,
About meekly shuffling down the path of mediocrity
Well if that's your road then take it but it's not the road for me
And I won't sit down
And I won't shut up
And most of all I will not grow up
And I won't sit down
And I won't shut up
And most of all I yeah I won't grow up
And I won't sit down
And I won't shut up
And most of all I will not grow up
And if all you ever do with your life is photosynthesize
Then you deserve every hour of these sleepless nights
That you spend wondering when you're gonna die
Now I'll play and you sing
The perfect way for the evening to begin
Now I'll play and you sing
The perfect way for the evening to begin
And I won't sit down
And I won't shut up
And most of all yeah I won't grow up
