U2 to sell their multi-million pound 'Claws'

U2 have approved calls to turn the giant claws currently being used as part of their stage set-up into permanent venues.

Following their Glastonbury performance last weekend, the band are due to wrap up their two-year 360 Tour up on July 30 in Canada. U2 tour director Craig Evans said three of the full, four-legged, 29,000-square-foot steel structures will be sold off.

"It's certainly our intention to see these things recycled into permanent and usable ventures," he told Billboard. "It represents too great an engineering feat to just use for [the tour] and put away in a warehouse somewhere."

The move comes after Mark Fisher, the tour's architect, appealed to the band to turn the giant claws into permanent venues, nearly two years ago. Each claw cost between £15m and £20m.

"[We are] now in discussions to send them into different places around the world and have them installed as permanent venues," Evans added. "Some major events have shown interest in these, from four different continents – and we haven't even really put the word out yet."

He said many buyers are interested in turning them into full interior pavilions and amphitheatres.

U2 bring out the hits at Glastonbury headline show

U2 finally made their first ever appearance at a rain-lashed Glastonbury festival tonight (June 24).

The Irish band were due to headline the Pyramid Stage in 2010, but cancelled and were replaced by Gorillaz after frontman Bono injured his back. They kicked off tonight's show with five songs in a row from their 1991 album 'Achtung Baby', flanked by huge video screens showing references to the band's 'Zoo TV' tour of the period.

Bono mentioned the non-event of last year, saying before 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For': "Sorry for calling in sick last time." He had earlier said to the audience, "It might be the leylines, but there's a very special feeling about tonight."

Before 'Beautiful Day' the video screens played a message from astronaut Mark Kelly, whose "Hello Glastonbury" message was greeted with loud cheers.

Bono also sang a snippet of the William Blake poem 'Jerusalem' before 'Where The Streets Have No Name'. He paid tribute to fellow Glastonbury headliners Beyonce, Coldplay and Primal Scream by singing snippets of their songs 'Independent Women', 'Yellow' and 'Movin' On Up' respectively.
Primal Scream were headlining Glastonbury's Other Stage at the same time as U2's set.

The band finished their show with a version of 'Out Of Control' from their 1980 debut album 'Boy'.

U2 to re-issue 'Achtung Baby' as deluxe edition

U2 will mark the 20th anniversary of their classic album 'Achtung Baby' by re-releasing it in a deluxe package.

As reported by Rolling Stone the re-issues will feature a plethora of unseen footage and rare versions of some of their most famous hits.

U2 guitarist The Edge said "There's some very interesting alternative versions that we discovered of songs that wouldn't have seen the light of day" and described them as being "like 'Achtung Baby' out of focus."

Paul McGuinness, U2's manager, added: "If you pile a lot of extra material and packaging and design work into a super-duper box set, there are people who will pay quite a lot for it, so you can budget it at a very high level and pump up the value."

The Irish band are also working on an app for the iPad to tie in with the album's anniversary.

U2 admit Glastonbury setlist arguments

U2 have admitted that there have been arguments within the band about what songs they should play at Glastonbury.

The band are set to headline the festival on Friday (June 24).

Drummer Larry Mullen Jr told Radio 1's Zane Lowe that there have been disagreements about how to approach their headlining shot.

He said: "We've gone through a number of combinations. Everybody seems to have a slightly different opinion, which is not good news."

"Everybody has a view on how it should go. There's the 'Where The Streets Have No Names' camp and then there's the more subtle approach, the 'Achtung Baby' dynamic approach, where you build slowly... Then there are those who think we should open with '40' (from 1983 album 'War'). It goes on. There are an awful lot of opinions."

Meanwhile, singer Bono told The Sun that he should be called Robo-Bono after having surgery on his spine which caused them to cancel their 2010 appearance.
He said: "I'm not just fixed, I'm better," before adding "Last year I came out of surgery in Munich and it went very well. If it hadn't then things could have been very different for me."
