Ryan Adams: 'I threw out 80 per cent of my album when I heard Laura Marling'

Ryan Adams has admitted Laura Marling helped inspire his forthcoming new album Ashes & Fire'.

The singer-songwriter said he ditched most of the songs he wrote for his 13th studio album after producer Glyn Jones passed on her 2010 LP 'I Speak Because I Can': 'I thought: 'For fuck's sake. I literally threw out 80 per cent of what I had. And it felt good to ask: 'What am I really capable of? I felt competitive again to write great songs.'

Recorded at Hollywood's Sunset Sound Factory, the album will be released on his own label, PAX-AM. Jones worked on Adams' albums 'Heartbreaker', 'Gold' and '29'. He is the son Ethan Johns, who worked with Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Who and The Rolling Stones.
Adams also revealed how he slipped into a period of heavy drug taking after he was diagnosed with Ménière's disease in 2006. This disease is a degnerative condition which affects hearing and balance.

"All the stuff I was doing exacerbated the disease," he told The Guardian. "You're not supposed to smoke, you're not supposed to drink alcohol, be stressed, eat salty foods. You're probably not supposed to do speedballs.

But the singer, who has since become sober, said taking opium helped him to write some of his songs. "I fully understand when people say Edgar Allen Poe used to smoke this stuff and have visions," he said. "I wrote the entire song 'How Do You Keep Love Alive' [from 2005's 'Cold Roses'] without writing a word down, and I played it on piano. And I've tried to understand the chord pattern ever since, because I can't fucking play it."

Laura Marling

Laura Beatrice Marling is an English folk musician from Eversley, Hampshire.

Initially prominent within the London folk scene, she has also toured with a number of well-known indie artists in the UK. Her sound is characterised by striking melodies and poetic lyricism.

Marling was part of the original line-up of indie folk band Noah and the Whale and was romantically linked with singer/guitarist Charlie Fink. She is featured as a background vocalist on their debut album Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down; however, she left the group before the album's 2008 release and split up with Fink that same year. She also appeared on The Rakes track "Suspicious Eyes", from the band's 2007 album Ten New Messages, credited as 'Laura Marlin'. Marling would later collaborate with Mystery Jets, contributing guest vocals to the single "Young Love", released 10 March 2008.

Her debut album Alas, I Cannot Swim was released on 4 February 2008, and later nominated for the 2008 Mercury Prize. The album, as well as subsequent singles, were released on Virgin Records. The third and final single from her album, "Night Terror" was released on 27 October 2008, coinciding with a 6-date "Night Terror tour".

The follow-up to Alas I Cannot Swim, titled I Speak Because I Can, was released on 22 March 2010. Produced by Ethan Johns, the album has a more mature sound and lyricism, dealing with "responsibility, particularly the responsibility of womanhood." The album is preceded by the singles "Goodbye England (Covered in Snow)", released on iTunes in December 2009 and "Devil's Spoke" on 15 March 2010. On 28 March 2010, I Speak Because I Can entered the UK Albums Chart at Number 4. It was also nominated for the 2010 Mercury Music Prize.

It is expected that Laura Marling will release her third album later this year.

Laura Marling - Your Only Doll (Dora)

I fell into the street
Poison in my veins
Clamber to my feet
And into the night again
Back to my home
Back to my owner
Who screams at my tardiness,
Put his hands to the sky

And says
'What can I do, with a girl
If she refuses to be mine?'

In his bed I am queen
Unobtainable me
Sexual being
Human with feelings
The two are not me
The two will not be mine

And what can you do
With a girl, if she
Refuses to be mine?

Put his hand on my shirt
Hand on my face
Head to the wall
When you've broken your only doll

And what will you do
With a girl
If she refuses to be alive?

And you've broken your only doll
And what will you do with a girl
If she's refusing to be alive?
