Penny Blacks

Penny Blacks is the musical pseudonym of singer-songwriter Jason Ogden. As the front man for the post-punk quartet Hospital Grade, Ogden has displayed a rare gift for melody and arrangement that has made his outfit a stand out on the local music scene.

With Penny Blacks, Ogden reveals another side of his songwriting that has been met with equal enthusiasm by audiences and music fans. Armed with only an acoustic guitar, Ogden has captivated crowds with his endearing songs and rare breed of folk and progressive pop. Ogden’s experience and talent are equaled only by his ability to relay his emotions through his songs. Each song Penny Blacks sings feels as though he is letting you in on his diary, as though he has brought a confession for you to share. It is not hard to be drawn in by Jason's sincerity and Penny Blacks is the perfect opportunity to experience it. Recent years saw the addition of a full band to Ogden’s already captivating intimate live performances. Containing members of The Carousels, Something French, Edge on Spiral, The Improvements, and Hospital Grade, the seven piece band has taken on a life and sound of its own.

Penny Blacks have built on the traditional rock foundation of two guitars, bass and drums by adding violin, cello, accordion and programmed and organic soundscapes to an effect that elevates the intimacy of the songs’ subject matter to a new level of intensity.

The sweet acoustic songs combined with Odgen’s brilliant and sincere lyrics are what make Penny Blacks so special. That’s why you should give them a listen, I’m sure you won’t regret it. If you have the chance to see them live, don’t miss it. I would love to see one of their gigs!

Penny Blacks released their second EP, ‘Gold Standards’ on April 26.
