After the somewhat surprising success of "The Seldom Seen Kid", the expectations for this "Build A Rocket Boys!" were very high.
For Elbow fans, it doesn’t disappoint, but in my opinion this is an album with two faces. There are moments of pure genius as "Lippy Kids", with lines like "Lippy kids on the corner again / Stealing booze and down long hungry kisses / Do They Know Those Days Are Golden", or "Open Arms", which sound like two hymns, but also songs like "The Birds" or "With Love," which are nothing more than mediocre songs.
Nevertheless, one thing can’t be denied: Guy Garvey's lyrics are simply brilliant. A good example, besides the verses I have quoted above, is "We got open arms for broken hearts / Like yours my boy, come home again".
This is an album that will easily appeal to people who already liked the band, but it will hardly make Elbow win new fans because it follows the sound of previous albums.
